Untangle ("the app") is a journaling and organization tool for people in or around therapy. Privacy is the core of how it is built. This page explains, in plain language, what happens with your information. The short version: your notes live on your phone, and your thoughts are processed by AI only in the moment you ask for it, never stored by us, never used to train AI, never sold.
All notes are stored in a local database on your device only. Deleting the app deletes them. You can also delete everything at any time via Settings → Delete all data. We keep no copy; there is nothing for us to delete on a server.
When you tap "Untangle" (or record a voice note), your text or audio is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, which forwards it to AI providers to do the work you asked for:
The result is returned to your phone and saved there. Our server keeps the content only inside the lifetime of that single request: audio is never written to storage, and transcripts and notes are never logged. Our providers process this data under API terms that prohibit using it to train their models. Anthropic retains API inputs briefly for abuse prevention before deletion; we deliberately use direct provider APIs with the strictest available retention settings and no intermediaries.
For reliability and abuse prevention we log technical metadata only: a hashed device identifier, timestamps, audio duration in seconds, AI token counts, response times, and error codes. This can never be traced back to you as a person, and it contains none of your content.
Purchases are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat (our subscription infrastructure). RevenueCat receives an anonymous device identifier and purchase history, never your notes. See RevenueCat's privacy policy for details.
Session reminders are scheduled locally on your device. The reminder text (for example, an insight you saved after a therapy session) never leaves your phone.
Because your content stays on your device and our server logs contain no personal content, most GDPR rights are fulfilled by you directly: deleting the app (or using Delete all data) removes your data completely. For any privacy question or request, contact us and we will respond within 30 days.
Untangle is a journaling and organization tool. It is not a medical device, does not provide diagnosis or treatment, and is not a replacement for professional care. If you are in crisis, please contact a crisis line or local emergency services, the app lists these under Settings → Crisis resources.
